Sustainability programmes fail when they are framed as cost. They succeed when each measure carries a number: litres saved, kilowatt-hours avoided, tonnes diverted, and the rupees attached to each.

Start with a resource balance

Before choosing measures, quantify what enters and leaves the site. A water balance and an energy balance almost always reveal unmetered consumption, and unmetered consumption is where losses hide.

Water: reuse before you treat more

Treated water reuse for flushing, gardening, cooling tower makeup and floor washing displaces purchased fresh water at a direct and easily calculated saving. In water-stressed parts of Karnataka it also reduces exposure to supply interruption.

Every measure should have a defined measurement and verification basis agreed before implementation. Without it, savings are asserted rather than demonstrated, and the next investment case becomes harder to make.
